How to Use Mage Hand in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

The iconic Mage Hand cantrip from Dungeons & Dragons appears in Baldur’s Gate 3. This invisible magical hand can be a helpful tool for characters with access to it, allowing for remote manipulation of objects. However, it is only available to certain classes and archetypes, following the D&D 5E rules. Bards, Warlocks, Wizards, Sorcerers, Eldritch Knights, and Arcane Trickster Rogues can learn this cantrip. Other classes can gain access through multiclassing. Here is how to use Mage Hand in BG3.

How to Use the Mage Hand Spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

How to Use Mage Hand in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

Casting Mage Hand requires Action and Concentration. It lasts 10 turns unless its low 3-hit point maximum is depleted. The main benefit of Mage Hand is being able to interact with objects from a distance.

To use it, select Mage Hand from your list of cantrips. This will summon the spectral hand. You’ll then be able to control it by clicking on its portrait next to your character’s. The hand can pick up objects, open doors and chests, move light sources, and use the Shove and Throw actions. It’s also handy for looting downed enemies.

However, Mage Hand has limited combat viability. Using your action to cast it means losing out on other options for a turn. Furthermore, with only three hit points, the hand is easily destroyed by enemies. The Shove action is rarely worth it in battles, either.

Instead, Mage Hand shines outside of fights. Use it to safely trigger traps, grab hard-to-reach items, move obstacles, and open doors and containers. It essentially serves as an extra hand for your party. Just do not rely on it during heated skirmishes.

Tips for Using Mage Hand Effectively

Here are a few tips for using Mage Hand effectively:

  • Use Mage Hand to your advantage in combat, but only use your action if it significantly impacts the battle.
  • It can distract enemies by moving objects around or making noise.
  • Keep an eye on the range of your Mage Hand at all times. If you lose track of it, you could lose control of it.
  • Don’t overextend your Mage Hand beyond its 18 meters range.
  • Use Mage Hand for tasks like opening doors and chests from a safe distance.

That covers all about Mage Hand in BG3. Also, you can look at our Baldur’s Gate 3 section here at Gamer Tweak.

How to Get to Baldur's Gate in BG3 (Baldur's Gate 3)

For those embarking on the epic journey of Baldur’s Gate 3, the sprawling city of Baldur’s Gate is a key location in Act 2 of the game. However, getting to this bustling trading hub takes some effort. This guide will outline the two main routes to reach the city and provide tips on overcoming its challenges.

How to Get to Baldur’s Gate City in BG3?

How to Get to Baldur's Gate in BG3 (Baldur's Gate 3)

To get to Baldur’s Gate in BG3, it’s highly recommended that you complete Act 1 of BG3 first. This allows you to level up your characters and gear up properly for the challenging enemies ahead. Act 1 results in some climactic events, after which new passageways to BG will open.

The Mountain Pass

One of the main routes to Baldur’s Gate is through the Mountain Pass to the west of the Act 1 area. This route involves getting past a contingent of formidable Githyanki warriors guarding the pass.

If Lae’zel is in your party, you may be able to talk your way past them. Otherwise, prepare for a challenging fight against their skilled swordsmanship and psychic abilities. Come well-equipped, and make sure your party is at least level 5 before attempting this passage.

Once you clear the pass, you’ll arrive at Rosymorn Monastery on the Act 2 map. You can travel to the grand city from there, likely battling more foes.

The Underdark

mountain pass or underdark path in baldur's gate 3

An alternative route is delving into the underground realm of the Underdark and emerging outside Baldur’s Gate. Several entrances to the Underdark in Act 1 include the Hag’s Lair, the Phase Spider Matriarch’s Cave, and the Goblin Camp.

Navigate to the beach area in the central region of the Underdark known as Grymforge. Here you can take a boat that will eventually lead to a mystical elevator raising you to the Act 2 map.

Note the Underdark contains many traps and dangerous creatures, so proceed cautiously. Also, be ready for a nasty curse blanketing the emergence point that may impede your journey to the city.

Progressing through Act 2 of BG3 will eventually lead you to the sprawling the city. Once you successfully navigate the challenges of Act 2, you’ll be rewarded with access to this new area’s bustling streets and intriguing characters.

That covers all the Baldur’s Gate City in BG3. If you’re not sure about which weapons you should go with, then check out our Best Weapons Ranked list.

Baldur's Gate 3: Ability Checks Guide

Ability Checks are a critical gameplay mechanic in Baldur’s Gate 3 that determines whether your character succeeds or fails at various actions and tasks. When attempting an action, the game will prompt you to make an Ability Check by rolling a 20-sided die (d20) and adding your character’s relevant ability modifier. You succeed if the total meets or exceeds the Difficulty Class (DC) set by the game.

How to Boost BG3 Ability Checks

Baldur's Gate 3: Ability Checks Guide

Understanding how to make effective Ability Checks is key to overcoming challenges and progressing through Baldur’s Gate 3. Each character has six core abilities Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. These abilities have a numerical score that provides a modifier you add to d20 rolls for relevant checks. For example, if you have 14 Strengths, your Strength modifier is +2, so you would add +2 to any Strength-based assessment.

You can boost your odds of success in several ways.

  1. Focus on your character’s strengths by choosing skills tied to their highest abilities. A high Strength or Dexterity character should lean on Athletics or Acrobatics checks.
  2. Pay attention to advantages and disadvantages, which let you roll 2d20 and take the higher or lower result. Advantages can come from equipment, spells, environmental factors and more.
  3. Don’t forget passive checks for perception and investigation – these are fixed bonuses that may automatically detect secrets.

Differences Between Ability Checks and Saving Throws

Baldur's Gate 3: Ability Checks Guide

When playing BG3, you’ll often be asked to make an ability check or a saving throw. It’s important to know the difference.

  • Saving Throws are reactionary and happen when your character needs to resist an effect. For Saving Throws, you roll a d20 and add your ability modifier for that Saving Throw (Strength, Dexterity, etc.) along with your proficiency bonus if you’re proficient in that Saving Throw.
  • Ability Checks are voluntary actions your character takes, like climbing a wall or sneaking past guards. You just roll a d20 and add the relevant ability modifier for an average Ability Check. For an Ability Check, like Athletics or Stealth, you also add your proficiency bonus if you’re proficient in that skill.

Choosing when to make Ability Checks, and weighing the risks and rewards of success or failure, is important in Baldur’s Gate 3. Save often so you can reload and retry failed checks if necessary.

That’s all we have Ability Checks in Baldur’s Gate (BG3). If you found this guide useful, head to our Baldur’s Gate 3 dedicated section.

How to Speak to the Dead in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3)

Want to speak with the dead in Baldur’s Gate 3? With the right items and spells, you can communicate with the spirits of the dead to gain valuable insights. Here’s everything you need to know to speak with lost souls and using the Amulet of Lost Voices in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Speak with Dead in BG3

BG3 Best Wizard Build (Best Background)

To speak with the dead in BG3, you must find the Amulet of Lost Voices. This handy amulet allows anyone to cast the Speak with Dead spell, regardless of your class or magical abilities. Without the amulet, only Wizards naturally learn the Speak with Dead spell. Clerics and Paladins can also cast it at the cost of breaking their oaths. Even if you don’t have a Wizard in your adventuring party, you can still learn necromancy spells by finding and reading the Necromancy of Thay book, which is hidden in a secret cellar laboratory.

You can initiate conversations with deceased NPCs or enemies with the spell or amulet. Look for bodies with the special interaction icon above them, then cast Speak with Dead to ask them questions.

Just be prepared, as disturbing a spirit’s rest can have consequences in Baldur’s Gate 3!

Amulet of Lost Voices Location in Baldur’s Gate 3

amulet of lost voices

You can find the Amulet of Lost Voices hidden in the Overgrown Ruins near Ravaged Beach, where you start the game after crashing. Head east from the Roadside Cliffs waypoint along the road to reach the ruins until you reach the entrance. Be ready for trouble, though, as bandits, traps, and undead fill the ruins. An easier option is using Thieves’ Tools and a high Dexterity check to bypass the Chapel Entrance and unlock the hatch leading down into the Dank Crypt. Otherwise, you’ll have to fight your way through the chapel above.

Once inside the crypt, head north to find a hidden room behind a large statue sarcophagus. Defeat the Entombed Acolytes and Warriors that attack when you enter, then loot the chest inside for the Amulet of Lost Voices. Equip this on a character, and you can now cast Speak with Dead whenever you find a corpse.

With these tips, you can speak to the dead in BG3. And for help on other topics not mentioned here, check our Baldur’s Gate 3 guides.

Baldur's Gate 3 How to Get Inspiration Points

Inspiration Points are a unique currency in Baldur’s Gate 3 that allows players to turn failure into success. They allow you to reroll a failed ability check, giving you a second chance to succeed. You can spend an Inspiration Point whenever you fail an important attack roll, saving throw, or skill check. Here’s everything you need to know about earning and spending these valuable points in BG3.

How to Get Inspiration Points in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3: How to Get Inspiration Points

Inspiration Points in BG3 are valuable resources you can earn by completing hidden achievements called Background Goals. These goals are tied to your character’s Background or archetype. When you take actions that align with your Background’s motivations, you can complete one of your character’s Background Goals. This rewards you with Experience Points and an Inspiration Point. Your companions can also complete their own Background Goals, even when not under your direct control, granting you Inspiration Points.

However, you can only hold a maximum of 4 Inspiration Points at once. Any additional Inspiration Points earned past this limit grant only Experience Points. So pay attention to your character’s personality and backstory, and take actions that fit their motivations.

Completing Background Goals

Each preset character background in the game has associated goals that encourage roleplaying. When you complete one of your background goals, you’ll be rewarded with an Inspiration Point.

  • Acolyte: Serve the gods. Learn about religious works. Help others in need.
  • Charlatan: Manipulate and deceive others. Gain the trust of others. Use your skills to get what you want.
  • Criminal: Steal from others. Lie to others. Commit acts of violence.
  • Entertainer: Perform for others. Entertain others with your stories. Make others laugh.
  • Folk Hero: Help others in your community. Protect the innocent. Stand up for what you believe in.
  • Guild Artisan: Create something of value. Help others with your skills. Make a name for yourself.
  • Haunted One: Face your fears. Help others who are struggling. Find redemption.
  • Noble: Help those in need. Use your influence to help others. Protect the innocent.
  • Outlander: Survive in the wild. Help others survive in the wild. Protect your community.
  • Sage: Learn about the world. Share your knowledge with others. Help others solve problems.
  • Soldier: Protect the innocent. Fight for what you believe in. Lead others into battle.
  • Urchin: Survive on the streets. Help others who are struggling. Find a place to belong.

When to Use Inspiration Points in BG3

Inspiration Points are valuable, so you want to use them wisely. Some good times to spend an Inspiration Point include:

  • Attempting a very difficult ability check
  • Failing an important attack roll in combat
  • Failing a saving throw against a nasty spell or trap
  • Any check where failure would lead to grave consequences

The key is to use these points judiciously because they give you a second chance at a pivotal moment. With Inspiration Points, you can sometimes turn disaster into triumph.

That’s all you need to know on Inspiration Points in Baldur’s Gate 3. Since you’re here, check out other guides in our BG3 section.

How to Find Orin in BG3?

Baldur's Gate 3: How to Find and Beat Orin The Red

To find Orin in BG3, you must recognize him among one of your companions once she shapeshifts and hides in your camp. During a long rest, Orin will disguise himself as one of your companions and attempt to harm a child. Be alert and see through the deception, realizing your lowest approval companion has been abducted – likely Lae’zel. Exposing the ploy triggers the next phase.

With your companion’s life at stake, an urgent quest to the Bhaal Temple in the Undercity Ruins begins. Assemble your party and supplies for the impending battle. Stock up on beneficial elixirs and pre-buff with spells like Guidance.

A DC25 Ability Check (Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion) is at the temple altar. Succeed to divert Orin’s attention from your companion onto yourself. Brace for the solo Dark Urge duel ahead.

How to Beat Orin in Baldur’s Gate 3?

The Orin fight itself plays out as a dramatic one-on-one duel if you pursue the Dark Urge path. Party members are not allowed to participate. Come prepared with self-buff spells like Bless for advantage. Orin shifts into a deadly Slayer form with bleed attacks and knockdown leaps.

For our Monk protagonist, Stunning Strike, followed by Flurry of Blows, proved highly effective at shutting down Orin’s offense while pummeling her with attacks. Other valuable tactics include spells and abilities that restrain Orin’s actions.

Defeating the boss nets exceptional magical weapons like the bloodthirsty dagger Crimson Mischief and the necrotic greatsword Netherstone-Pommeled Bloodthirst. Their enchantments and on-hit effects make them top-tier loot.

This Dark Urge battle and rescue mission can end in hard-earned glory with proper preparation. Follow these steps to outwit Orin, save your companion and acquire legendary armaments.

Baldur's Gate 3: How to Remove Bane Status Effect

Bane is a rare but pesky status effect in BG3 (Baldur’s Gate 3) that causes your character to receive a -1d4 penalty to attack rolls and saving throws. If Bane has afflicted you, don’t worry; we have the easiest solutions for you to get rid of this status effect and get back into the fight. So here’s how to cure and remove Bane in BG3.

How to Remove & Cure Bane in BG3

To cure and remove Bane in BG3, you have two options:

  1. Long Rest: The most straightforward way is to rest at your campsite. Interact with the bedroll to begin the rest.
  2. Remove Curse Spell: Available to Clerics, Warlocks, and Wizards at level 5, this 3rd-level Abjuration spell will instantly remove Bane.

While Remove Curse will allow you to quickly remove Bane and conserve the spell slot, taking a long rest is the easiest method.

remove curse bg3

What Causes Bane Status Effect in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Bane is a negative status condition that persistently hinders you, imposing a penalty to your attack rolls and saving throws until you remove it. There are two potential causes of Bane in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Equipping the Gloves of Power without the Mark of Absolute
  • Using the Absolute Warboard and casting Absolute Protection without the Mark of Absolute

The key is the Mark of Absolute, which prevents Bane from being applied when using Absolute-related items. If you use these items without the brand, you will continually inflict yourself with Bane.

How to Prevent Future Bane?

To prevent the reapplication of Bane, you need the Mark of Absolute. This can be obtained from Priestess Gut at the Goblin Camp, though receiving the brand may impact some endings. Consider carefully before taking on the Mark.

With the Mark applied, you can safely utilize Absolute items without incurring Bane. Enter the campsite and rest in the bedroll to remove any Bane effects. So don’t despair if you find yourself struggling under Bane. A long rest or Remove Curse is all you need to lift the curse and return to battling at full strength. With the Mark, you can avoid any future Bane afflictions.

How to Beat the Spectator in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Spectator is one of the challenging bosses you’ll face on your journey through Baldur’s Gate 3. It has some nasty tricks up his sleeve, but you can take him down with the right strategy. There are two ways to encounter the Spectator. The first way is to find and open the Iron Flask, which will summon it. This is not recommended, however, as you won’t get any quest rewards for killing it. A better option is the Find the Missing Shipment quest, where you’ll encounter the Spectator organically in the Underdark. This method will give you extra rewards after you kill it. Here’s how to defeat the Spectator in BG3.

How to Beat Spectator Boss in BG3

How to Beat the Spectator in Baldur’s Gate 3

When combat begins, the Spectator gets a surprise turn to act before your party. Use this knowledge to your advantage by saving before the fight. If the Spectator deals much damage in its surprise round, reload and try again. The Spectator will use its various Rays during the sneak attack, such as Wounding Ray, Paralyzing Ray, and Fear Ray. These can quickly weaken your party, so be prepared to reset if things go badly.

  1. On the first turn after the surprise turn, the Spectator will unpetrify and charm the Drow mage Dhourn. It will then cast Darkness on your party.
  2. In subsequent rounds, the Spectator will continue to unpetrify and charm Drow. Fortunately, you can break the spell by attacking the freed it once. This will turn them into allies in your fight against the Spectator. Just don’t attack them twice, or they’ll turn hostile. Use this mechanic to swell your ranks and turn the tide against your Spectator foe.

With the extra allies from the freed drow, you should be able to overwhelm the Spectators by sheer numbers. Focus fire on your party and allies to take them down quickly.

Should You Use Dhourn and Drow when Fighting?

How to Beat the Spectator in Baldur’s Gate 3

With Drow and Dhourn on your side, you can more easily defeat Spectator. Focus fire on Spectator while your new allies provide support. Make sure to heal Drow and Dhourn if needed since they will remain friendly unless attacked twice. Handling this encounter by recruiting Drow and Dhourn will make the fight much easier.

With these tips, you can defeat the Spectator and continue your Baldur’s Gate 3 adventure. And for help on other topics not mentioned here be sure to check our Baldur’s Gate 3 guides.

Conversation with Gerringothe

When you first approach Gerringothe, a conversation will be triggered where they will demand gold from you in order to pass. You can avoid combat altogether by convincing them to pay you instead.

Keep asking questions instead of attacking or giving more gold, and eventually, you’ll unlock a Monk-specific dialogue option to help Gerringothe reflect on the dangers of greed. This requires a DC 18 check.

After getting Gerringothe to doubt herself, you’ll get to make a difficult Persuasion, Deception or Intimidation skills to convince her to renounce her ways. If you succeed, Gerringothe and her minions will explode. Be sure to loot the Twist of Fortune Morningstar.

Characters with high persuasion or deception skills, like Rogues, Bards, and Monks, will have the best chance at pulling this off.
